Abstract

676,830. Charging and discharging batteries. TUDOR ACCUMULATOR CO., Ltd. Feb. 26, 1951 [April 6, 1950], No. 8671/50. Drawings to Specification. Class 38 (iv). A load is supplied alternately by two batteries, each associated with a contact-making amperehour meter controlling relays adapted to switch the load from one battery to the other upon the first reaching a predetermined degree of discharge and to connect it to a charging source until recharged. Each meter may be lagged in the " charge " direction to allow for an increase of charge over discharge. A switch may be provided whereby either battery may be charged independently of its associated meter. The main charge for each battery may be supplemented by a trickle charge through a circuit bypassing the meters. The relay system may comprise (a) a charging relay for each battery having contacts which close the charging circuit of the corresponding battery when the relay becomes energized over the meter contacts, and (b) a change-over relay for connecting one battery to the load whilst the other is either on charge or standing by fully charged, the arrangement being such that the change-over relay is energized over contacts of one charging relay (when energized) and subsequently energized over contacts of the other charging relay (after the first has become de-energized on completion of charge of its associated battery) until the second battery is discharged and said other charging relay becomes de-energized.
