Abstract

676,807. Electrostatic precipitation. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Dec. 30,1949 [Jan. 28,1949], No. 33357/49. Class 39 (i). In an electrostatic precipitator a dust col. lector electrode assembly comprises a screen 21 of intermeshed filaments of relatively high electrical resistance positioned transverse to the gas flow, and conductive spikes 27 penetrating the screen and surrounded by a conductive wire framework 22, Figs. 1 and 2, a framework 42, Fig. 6, of egg-box type construction, or by further spikes 55, Fig. 10, embedded in the screen so that electrostatic fields may be established across sections of the screen. An ionizing field is established before the screen between the expanded heads 12 of the electrodes 27 and the edges 16 of circular openings in the top plate of the casing 13, as shown in Figs. 2 and 10, or as shown in Fig. 6, between tubular electrodes 30 and ionizing wires 34. In Fig. 6, the tubular electrodes 30 support the spikes 27, but in a modification, Fig. 8 (not shown), rods supporting the spikes 27 also support the ionizing wires 34. In end embodiment the filamentary screen is readily removable from the casing 13. The screen may consist, for example, of asbestos fibres, urea plastic filaments, or glass wool filaments coated with a semi-conductive material such as petroleum jelly. Specification 475,443 is referred to.
