Abstract

Flexible bags are made from a plasticized copolymer containing from 90 to 92 per cent by weight of vinylidene chloride and from 10 to 8 per cent of acrylonitrile, by extruding the polymer into a tube which is super-cooled, then extended longitudinally and radially to align the submicroscopic crystallites parallel to the film surface, and finally sealed at one end, e.g. by flattening and heating under moderate pressure. The bags may be made with pockets or other special shapes by welding the flattened tube along the desired contour lines. In use, a bag slightly larger than the article to be protected is employed and the bag shrunk on to the article. In an example a copolymer comprising 90.6 per cent vinylidene chloride and 9.4 per cent acrylonitrile was prepared by polymerizing a mixture of vinylidene chloride monomer and acrylonitrile in water in the presence of the sodium salt of the dihexyl ester of sulphosuccinic acid and as catalyst hydrogen peroxide and sufficient ferric nitrate to provide 14 parts of iron per million parts of the mixed monomers. The mixture was emulsified and was held at 45 DEG C. for 22 hours, at which time polymerization was 80 per cent complete. The copolymer was coagulated from its latex, washed, dried, plasticized with 10 per cent of its weight of dibutyl sebacate, stabilized with 2.0 per cent of tetrasodium pyrophosphate, and then extruded into tubes. Specification 518,470, [Group VI], is referred to.
