Abstract

A composition for staining and filling wood comprises an emulsion formed of (1) a homogeneous mixture of an acid organic dyestuff, a resinous binder and a solvent for these ingredients; (2) a drying oil; (3) a pigment and (4) a filler, the resinous binder being nitrocellulose, cellulose acetobutyrate, phenol formaldehyde resin and alkyd type resins, the pigment being an iron oxide, black toner, an organic lake, carbon black or activated carbon and the filler being an inorganic inert material, wood flour, starch or corn meal. A dispersing agent such as the sodium salt of alkyl naphthalene sulphonic acid or asbestine and a plasticizer such as tricresyl phosphite may also be present. Specified inorganic inert materials are silica, barytes, asbestine, calcium carbonate, calcium sulphate, bentonite and resin-coated calcium carbonate. Specified solvents are tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, diethylene glycol derivatives and homologues, amino alkyl alcohols such as methyl amino propanol, cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone, alone, in mixture with each other or in mixture with aromatic hydrocarbons or volatile alcohols such as toluol, xylol, aromatic naphthas, petroleum naphtha, ethyl, propyl, butyl and amyl alcohol or the acetates.ALSO:A composition for staining and filling wood comprises an emulsion formed of (1) a homogeneous mixture of an acid organic dyestuff, a resinous binder and a solvent for these ingredients; (2) a drying oil; (3) a pigment and (4) a filler, the resinous binder being a resin or gum, the pigment being an iron oxide, black toner, an organic lake, carbon black or activated carbon and the filler being an inorganic inert material, wood flour, starch or corn meal. A dispersing agent such as the sodium salt of alkyl napthalene sulphonic acid or asbestine and a plasticizer such as tricresyl phosphate may also be present. Specified binders are manila gum, shellac, accroides gum, sandarac gum and dammar gum, specified inorganic inert materials are silica, barytes, asbestine, calcium carbonate, calcium sulphate, bentonite and resin-coated calcium carbonate. Specified solvents are tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, diethylene glycol monoethyl ether and other derivatives and homologues, amino alkyl alcohols such as methyl amino propanol, cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone alone in mixture with each other or in mixture with aromatic hydrocarbons or volatile alcohols such as toluol, xylol, aromatic naphthas, petroleum naphtha, ethyl alcohol, propyl-alcohol, butyl alcohol, amyl alcohol, or the acetates.
