Abstract
<PICT:0676212/III/1> In a process for growing single crystals by circulating nutrient solution between a dissolving tank 1 and a growing tank 13 maintained at constant, different temperatures, solute is added substantially continuously to the tank 1 from hopper 51 and the rate of addition is automatically controlled to maintain the concentration in the tank substantially constant. The temperature in the dissolving tank is maintained at least 1 DEG C above that at which the solution would be saturated. As described pump 12 draws solution from tank 1 through filter 8 and viscosity meter 10 and delivers it to the bottom of container 13. Increases and decreases in viscosity (and hence concentration) are used, (see Group XXXV), to decrease or increase the rate of addition of solute from the hopper 51. The containers 1, 13 are heated by electrical jackets 2, 14 and the temperatures are thermostatically controlled. Connecting pipes 11, 17 are also heated. Seed crystals 23 are carried by a spider 22 in container 13, the spider being rotated first one way and then the other by suitable means. Instead of viscosity any other parameter, e.g. density, dependent upon concentration may be used to control the addition of solute. Alternatively the rate of addition of solute may be preset in accordance with the rate of crystal growth as determined over the entire growing period by experiment. The crystallization of ethylene diamine tartrate is referred to using a solution which would be saturated at 45 DEG C with a temperature of 50 DEG C in the dissolving tank and of 42.5 DEG C in the growing tank.
