In a cutter head for a mineral mining machine there is mounted on the end of a hollow arm 14, 18 housings 61 that rotatably support two counter-rotating tool holding members 65 in the form of spherical calottes, the axis of rotation of which form in the outermost direction with the longitudinal axis of the arm an angle of less than 90 degrees so that the clearance between the members is smaller at the outermost than at the innermost point of the head. The members 65 are driven from a shaft 15 through a common bevel gear 57 and bevel gears 58, 59 each attached to a shaft 60 secured to a boss 66 of each member. The cutters 67 are offset relative to each other in the direction of the axis of rotation of the member whilst worm gearing can be provided to rotate said housing so that the plane containing the axis of rotation of the tool holding members can be rotated about the longitudinal axis of the arm. The cutter head and arm may be used in a hand machine or may be mounted on a self-propelled vehicle in which case the arm is mounted either to rotate about a horizontal arm in a housing which itself can be rotated about a vertical axis, both movements being controlled by hydraulic jacks, or it can be rigidly supported in a housing 77 that is rotated by jacks 92 about trunnions 82 on arms 83 secured to a cross plate 84 on a rotatable king post 85, the movements of the operating jacks being controlled so that a roller 99 on the rear of the housing 77 follows the contour of a template 96.
