Abstract
675,449. Reciprocatory filing. AKTIEBOLAGET DENTATUS. Aug. 22, 1950 [Aug. 23, 1949], No. 20735/50. Class 83 (iii). [Also in Groups XXIII and XXIV] A reciprocatory hand tool has a holder 13 for a file or grinding-block driven by a crank mechanism in which the length of stroke can be varied by adjusting the eccentricity of the crank-pin 8, balancing means being automatically adjusted at the same time so that the crank mechanism remains balanced. The balancing means may be a counterweight mounted in or on the rotating part of the crank mechanism or an eccentric flywheel. A shaft 5 is driven by a flexible shaft &c. and carries an eccentrically-mounted member 6 in which is journalled the crank-pin 8. The connecting-rod 12 is secured to the crank-pin andjoinedtothe tool-holder 13 by a ball and socket joint 21 so that the holder is reciprocated in a bush 14 but is free to adjust itself about its own axis in order that the tool secured in a socket 22 may adjust itself into the working plane. A spring 23 allows the tool to retract, if it should meet undue resistance. An enlarged bore 10 is formed in the member 6 and, as it is of such dimensions that the weight removed equals the weight of the rotating parts of the crank mechanism, the member 6 forms an eccentric mass which, adjusted to any angular position to vary the crank-pin eccentricity, always balances the rotating parts of the crank mechanism. The member 6 extends to the edge of the shaft on one side, to facilitate its adjustment, and is locked by a screw 7. If the tool is required to work in any particular angular setting, a collar 26 having a slot 27 to engage the tool-clamping screw boss 28 can be displaced along the bush 14 and locked by a screw 29. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, an additional circular motion is given to a tool such as a grinding-block 33 which is universally mounted on a rod 32 pivoted on the tool-clamping screw 25 and oscillated by an additional journal-pin 31 on the crank-pin. The inner end of the rod 32 may be connected to the pin 31 by a bearing, as shown, or by a slot, in which case the rod is clamped to the screw 25 and the tool can then retract against the spring 23 if undue resistance is met. The cap 16 can be turned through 180 degrees to align holes 17 and 37 with the appropriate connecting-rods and the enlarged bore 10 can be filled with oil to lubricate the crank-pin through holes 30.
