Abstract

655,306. Grinding and polishing lenses. WISEMAN & CO. (LENS MANUFACTURERS), Ltd., and MEENS, H. Oct. 20, 1947, No. 28043. [Class 60] A lens grinding and/or polishing machine has at least two lens carriers A mounted for rotation or angular oscillation about a common axis and each adapted to support a number of lens blanks, and a number of coupled tool holders H pivotally suspended from a common bracket 2 to swing in unison about their pivots and each associated with a carrier, means being provided to impart a reciprocatory movement to the bracket for varying the range of the stroke of the tool holders and means also being provided for imparting an oscillatory motion to the linkage 13 coupling the tool holders. The latter are coupled by a connecting rod F with a crank-pin E which rotates about a shaft 17 mounted in a rotating eccentric 18. The bracket 2 is pivotally connected at 3 with an arm 20 reciprocated by an eccentric 22 driven in timed relation with the crank E. The ratio of the throws of the eccentrics 18 and 22 and their relative speeds of rotation may be varied. The tools. which are connected to their holders by universal joints and verticallyadjustable rods 7, are subjected to pressure by means of an adjustably-positioned weight 5 on a spring. The carriers are partly immersed in a bath of grinding or polishing medium and are rotated by a shaft B the speed of which is determined by the number of lenses mounted on each carrier and the rotational speed of the crank-pin 17. The eccentric 18 may not be used. In a modification, sector-shaped carriers mounted on a pivot coaxial with the shaft B receive an angular oscillation from the latter through the medium of a cam.
