Abstract
675,023. Compound sheet materials. STOCKER, F. A. Aug. 5, 1949 [Dec. 31, 1948], No. 20440/49. Class 140. A laminated structure such as that described in Specification 675,022 is made by simultaneously advancing a pair of independent webs, forming one or more continuous filaments of reinforcing material into a predetermined pattern of a width approximating that of the webs and advancing it in the direction of their advance, applying a laminating agent to one of the webs and superimposing the webs with the pattern and agent therebetween during said advance. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, webs 12 and 22 of creped and plain kraft paper, which may have slightly different widths, are fed from rolls 10 and 20 over guide-rolls 14 and 24, the web 22 making contact with a coating roll 28 turning in a vat 30 containing liquid laminating agent, to combining rolls 16 and 18 at each end of the lower of which is a chain 40 advancing on driving and idler sprockets 32 and 44 and carrying pins 46. A unit 50 comprises a shuttle which runs a filament back and forth between the rows of pins, and either each pin, attached to a bell-crank lever, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), or the shuttle, Figs. 2, 3, 4 (not shown), is oscillated by cam means to turn the filament around a pin at the end of each stroke to form a pattern which is advanced to the nip of the combining rolls, from where the combined webs pass over heating rollers 32 and 34 to a reel 38. In a modified apparatus shown in Fig. 5, the web 12 passes over an additional guide roller 114, and chains 40 are replaced by a wheel 110, at each end of the roll 16, carrying pins 112 which function in the same manner as the pins 46.
