Abstract
674,971. Vehicle collision guards. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. July 18, 1950 [July 8, 1949], No. 18182/49. Class 103(ii) A motor vehicle bumper comprising spring support bars by means of which the bumper is mounted on the vehicle, a contact bar in one or more sections capable of resilient deformation and attached to the spring supports and a top web extending along the length of the contact bar, is characterized in that the top web is formed in a number of sections each connected with the contact bar at a plurality of points spaced along the length of the contact bar through resilient connections which permit bending of the contact bar without substantial deformation of the top web occurring. The contact bar 32 is secured to the chassis 34 by means of spring-support bars 33, the top edge of the bumper being substantially on a level with a styling shelf 31 of the body panels 30. A top web 38 is supported from the bar 32 to mask the gap between the contact bar and the shelf 31. The web 38 is formed in three sections separated by over-ride brackets 42 and each section is secured to the contact bar by at least two resilient connections which may each comprise a resilient strip of metal or, as shown, U-section and angle section members 41 connected by a rubber block 40. Alternative embodiments are described which include a contact bar constructed from three inter-connected sections and modified supports for the member 38.
