Abstract
1397757 Vehicle bumpers DAIMLER-BENZ AG 13 Sept 1972 [1 Oct 1971] 42500/72 Heading B7J A vehicle bumper bar 17a is attachable to a vehicle chassis member 21 by intermediate elements 22, 23 acting as mounting brackets and permanently deformable to dissipate impact energy, each element 22, 23 being a strip-shaped metallic element of rectangular cross-section arranged with its longer side vertical and exhibiting a straight section 23 and at least one curve, e.g. 23a when viewed from above which is deformable by rolling along itself, as shown in Fig. 4, by a predetermined load acting in the longitudinal direction of section 23. An element may extend generally longitudinally of the vehicle, as element 23, or obliquely as element 22. Two elements (13, 14), Fig. 2 (not shown), may be arranged one on each opposed side of a longitudinal chassis member (16) and an element may be S-shaped, Fig. 5 (not shown). Each element may vary in thickness or width, for example by tapering in width towards its midlength, Fig. 6 (not shown). The ends of each element form mounting flanges, e.g. 18a, 19a, 20, 24 shaped to correspond with the surfaces to which they are attached.
