674,944. Brake drums. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and BUTLER, H. J. Jan. 12, 1950 [Feb. 1, 1949], No. 2694/49. Class 103 (i). A brake drum comprises a backing member 1 and a springy metal friction element 5 locally attached thereto but spaced away from the backing member between the points of attach. ment. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the element 5 consists of a strip of metal, preferably beryllium-copper, which passes round the drum in and out of alternate circumferentially spaced slots 4, the parts of the strip intermediate the slots standing away from the drum. In operation, they are pressed into contact with the drum as a shoe passes over them and by springing away afterwards are readily cooled by air blowing between them and the drum, the latter receiving heat only by conduction. In modifications described, the strips may be in one continuous length arranged in a spiral. As shown in Fig. 3, separate lengths of strip 6 are wound helically 'between adjacent slots 4. In another form of the invention, the slots for adjacent strips are staggered circumferentially the strips being disposed on each side of the drum with their ends secured together in the slots.
