Abstract
Polymeric organo silicon compounds in which the silicon atoms are linked together by phenylene radicals are obtained when a polysilane of the general formula R(2n+2)Sin in which n is an integer and has a value of at least 2 and each R represents a chlorine atom or a methyl radical, there being at least one chlorine atom per silicon atom, is reacted with benzene at a temperature of from 200 DEG to 400 DEG C. in the presence of aluminium chloride or a mixture containing boron trichloride and at least 50 per cent by weight of aluminium chloride. In example 1, a polymeric compound is obtained by heating hexachlorodisilane and benzene in the presence of aluminium chloride in a sealed bomb. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 684,638, [Group IV (b)].ALSO:Phenylchlorosilanes are prepared by reacting a polysilane of the general formula R(2n+2)Sin, or a mixture thereof, wherein the silicon atoms are linked through Si-Si bonds, R represents chlorine or a methyl radical, there being at least one chlorine atom per silicon atom, and n is an integer and has a value of at least 2, with benzene at a temperature of from 200 DEG to 400 DEG C. in the presence of aluminium chloride or a mixture containing boron trichloride and at least 50 per cent by weight of aluminium chloride. Suitable polysilane reactants are Cl3Si.SiCl3, (CH3)2ClSi.Si(CH3)2Cl, (CH3)2ClSi.Si(Cl2)SiCl3 and CH3Cl2Si.Si(CH3Cl)SiCl2CH3. The aluminium chloride or mixture of boron trichloride and aluminium chloride may be present in an amount from 0.1 to 5 per cent by weight based on the total weight of reactants. In the examples phenyltrichlorosilane, <FORM:0674591/IV (b)/1> and <FORM:0674591/IV (b)/2> are obtained from the reaction of benzene and Cl3Si.SiCl3, a mixture of phenyldimethylchlorosilane and phenylmethyldichlorosilane is obtained from the reaction of benzene and a mixture of sym. and unsym. (CH3)2Cl4Si2, (CH3)4Cl2Si2 and (CH3)3Cl3Si2, phenyl-methyl-dichlorosilane is obtained from the reaction of sym. and unsym. (CH3)2Cl4Si2 and benzene, and phenyltrichlorosilane and diphenyldichlorosilane are obtained from the reaction of benzene and octachlorotrisilane. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 684,638.
