Abstract

674,055. Powder metallurgy; making bearing surfaces. WILLIAMS, W. P. (Soc. Edras). Nov. 16, 1948, No. 29753/48. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). [Also in Groups XXIV and XXXIV] A metal article comprises a body of sintered metal powder in which is embedded a thin apertured frame, portions of which project. In the manufacture of a bearing liner, a steelapertured frame 1 is embedded in a 60/30 copper-lead alloy powder (obtained by the method of Specification 654,803, [Group II]), and pre-sintered at about 400‹ C. The assembly is then pressed at 100-1000 kgs./cm<SP>2</SP>. in a final mould and sintered at about 750-800‹ C. It may then be pressed again. Locating bushes la project from the frame 1 and lubrication holes 8 are formed initially in the powder. Bearing liners are also made by partly covering a metal cloth frame with the powder. Final sizing may then be carried out by compression between the shaft and the bearing in assembled positions. When sintering a bronze alloy powder, the cloth may have iron warps and copper wefts. Brake or clutch linings may be made in a similar manner. U.S.A. Specification 1,919,168 also is referred to.
