Abstract
673,550. Launching aircraft. VICKERS-ARMSTRONGS, Ltd., and WALLIS, B. N. Nov. 13, 1950 [Oct. 19, 1949], No. 26851/49. Class 4. Aeroplane launching apparatus comprises a carriage which may be propelled along the take-off runway and which supports the aeroplane with freedom to assume the attitude of flight, the aeroplane being locked to the carriage until the lifting force developed exceeds the take-off weight by a predetermined margin, release mechanism being operated automatically when such excess lift has been maintained continuously for a predetermined period. As shown the aeroplane 19 is supported on the carriage by a column 20 carried by a duplex parallel linkage 21, 25, to enable the machine to be raised or lowered without affecting its attitude, and the aeroplane may swivel about the column 20 so that its longitudinal axis lies along the relative wind. The locking and release mechanism may be as described in Specification 673,551, in which a detent on the aircraft is engaged by a latch on the carriage, a bolt loaded by compression springs being associated with the latch and moved to release the latch when the lift generated by the aircraft exceeds its weight by an amount equal to the loading of the springs, the necessary time delay being obtained by a dashpot arranged to ensure that the release movement of the bolt occupies a predetermined minimum period. The carriage shown is provided with flanged wheels 15 to enable it to run along guide rails, clips 30 which engage the heads of the rails preventing the carriage from leaving the track. Jet propulsion units 18 are mounted on a rear transverse member 14 connecting side booms 10, 11 which serve as fuel tanks. The supply of fuel to the propulsion units may be cut off and brakes 29 applied automatically when the aeroplane is released, for example by the operation of trip mechanism when the locking bolt is released. Instead of running on guide rails the carriage may be provided with self contained steering apparatus for operation from a remote point. The apparatus may be used for testing purposes, a mechanism being provided to prevent operation of the bolt release mechanism when the carriage speed reaches the value necessary to produce the predetermined excess lift.
