Abstract

673,475. Fitting covers to cans; rotary conveyers. CONTINENTAL CAN CO., Inc. Aug. 12, 1949. [Sept. 28, 1948] No. 21078/49. Class 78 (i). [Also in Group XXII] An apparatus, for feeding covers for assembly on cans, comprises a cover-supporting feedway 37-41 over which covers are conveyed, a conveyer 5 having thereon upstanding lugs 11 effective to push the covers along said feedway, means 18 for depositing the covers on the feedway in position for being engaged by said lugs and retarding means 31 engageable by each cover as it is moved along the feedway by a said lug and effective to tend to retard progression of said cover and momentarily to press and hold it against said lug. Fig. 1. General. Can bodies are fed by endless chains 7 governed by timing screw 8 past a no-can-no-cover feed C in to pockets 6 of rotor 5. Can covers are fed by triple feeding screws 17 through opening 20, and are impelled by pusher lugs 11 along a feedway 21 past retarding means 31 which squeezes the cover between a pusher lug 11 and a lug 9 on rotor 5 and down into feedway 41 to position itself at 48 over a can body. The can body and cover are sealed together by and transferred to turret E, and discharged by turret F. All the mechanisms are driven from one shaft. Figs. 2, 4 and 11. The cover (from opening 20) is pushed along an arcuate channel 21 which is formed on the underside of plate 15 with lower projecting rails 37 on which the cover is supported, and the cover is thus pushed by pusher lug 11 (Fig. 11) formed on one side of pocket 6 of rotor 5, said pusher lug 11 being preceded by placer lug 9 spaced therefrom by a distance equal to the cover diameter and at a relatively lower height so that the cover may be positively inserted therebetween as follows. The cover, pushed by lug 11 along said channel 21 is pressed (Fig. 4) down incline 38 (formed in said channel) by means of retarder shoe 28 which is resiliently mounted on plate 15 by springs 34 and engages the covers by means of side portions 31. The cover is thus pressed backwards relatively to and against lug 11 and its forward lip passes beneath lug 9 so that the cover is securely positioned to be pushed further along lower channel 41 to meet the can body which is moved upwards thereto from below and the cover edges are seamed on to the can between rolls.
