Abstract

648,471. Conveyers; feeding and discharging cans. CHISHOLM-RYDER.CO., Inc. Feb. 21, 1948, No. 5223. Convention date, July 15,1940. [Class 78 (i)] Cans are transferred individually to can carriers on a conveyer in timed relation to the conveyer movement by means of a screw angularly disposed to the conveyer and having. an enlarging spiral thread leading to an enlarged portion provided with a groove continuing the thread but rapidly diminishing in depth for discharging articles radially into the can carriers. Can carriers 25 are mounted on an endless chain 26 carried by sprockets 27 and 28, Fig. 4, sprocket 27 being mounted on a driven shaft 29. A feed conveyer comprises slats 56 on an endless chain 55 disposed parallel to chain 26 and carried by sprockets, one end sprocket 53 being attached to shaft 29. On rotation of shaft 29 chain 55 travels faster than chain 26 owing to the larger sprocket 53. Slats 56 are guided on horizontal rails 57 and 58. Chain 55 moves towards the right,. Fig. 2. The cans 50 are pressed into engagement with the enlarging thread 70 of the screw 60 by a leaf-spring 75 and on reaching the enlarged portion 71 are thrust by the pushing action of the rapidly diminishing groove 73 into the can carriers. The screw shaft, 72 is mounted in fixed bearings 63, 64 and is driven through bevel gears 65, 66 from a shaft 38 having a sprocket 40 driven from a motor, not shown. Shaft 29 is driven through gears 35, 37 from shaft 38 so that carriers 25 move in synchronism with the screw 60. Carriers, attaching to chains.-Each carrier comprises a base plate 85, Fig. 5, having a downwardly projecting lug 86 pivoted to ears 88 projecting outwardly from alternate links of chain 26. Feeding &c.-The receiving edge of the plate 85 is bevelled at 89 to assist smooth transfer from conveyer slats 56 and the opposite edge is indented at 90 and bevelled underneath at 91 to provide a recess to accommodate a transfer wheel 116 having a bevelled edge 123 for transferring cans from the carriers. Front and rear walls 92, 93 of the carriers are shaped to assist transfer and from these on the discharge side rise two posts 95, 96 supporting a swinging top member 98 having a smooth bottom 99 to engage the upper run of a can and an undercut bevel 101 to assist transfer. A lip 103 overbalances the top member but is supported by a lug 106 engaging a guide rail 107. At the transfer point from the screw a depression in rail 107 assists the cans sliding into the carriers after which rail 107 is discontinued as the top is firm on the can. The cans are inverted on the lower run of carriers 25 and then reach the discharge point where rail 107 again engages lug 106 while a cam 115, Fig. 2, pushes the cans on to wheel 116. Guides 162, 163 prevent tilting of the can carriers and similar guides, Fig. 3, are placed around the track to guide the carriers. A set of guards 190, 189 and 78 prevents the cans slipping from the carriers.
