Abstract

673,379. Automatic servo control systems. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd., S., and FURZEHILL LABORATORIES, Ltd. Nov. 28, 1950 [Aug. 31, 1949], No. 22598/49. Class 38 (iv). In a servo control system for an automatic pilot a testing signal having a signal frequency higher than that to which the servomotor can respond (e.g. 40 c.p.s.) is injected in series with the deviation signal, and its magnitude and phase are checked at the motor terminals to detect any fault in the servo amplifier. As applied to an automatic pilot such as that described in Specification 611,037, wherein the rudder 9 is controlled by signals from a compass 2, rate of turn gyro 1, and speed of rudder displacement generator 5, a testing signal from a modulator 21 is also injected into the amplifier 3. The modulator is fed from a 400-cycle source 25 (common to the other units of the servo system) and modulated at the test frequency by an oscillator 20. The signal at the servomotor terminals is demodulated and filtered to remove any control signals, and then compared with the original test frequency in a demodulator 24 to produce a D.C. output dependent on its amplitude and phase. This output is fed to a polarized relay 17 controlling the clutch 6 between the servomotor and the rudder.
