Abstract
673,168. Mathematical drawing appliances. STRECKER, G. Jan. 3, 1950 [Jan. 3, 1949], No. 129/50. Class 97 (iii). [Also in Group XXIV] In a variable-speed gear having one or more tiltable rollers 3a, 3b, Fig. 11, frictionally engaging bevel wheels 1, 2 on co-axial driving and driven shafts 6, 8, the contact surfaces of the rollers and wheels are such that, as the rollers 3a are tilted to vary the speedratio, the contact points B1 of the rollers with the wheels also varies. Wear of the rollers is thus diminished. The profiles of the rollers and wheels may be circular arcs or curves of variable curvature. As shown the wheels 1, 2 are of variable curvature, the wheel 2 being slidable axially under the action of a spring or torque responsive means or both. The rollers 3a, 3b are tiltable about axes 5a, 5b in a pressure balancing frame 14 and the yokes 4a, 4b carrying the roller spindles can slide relatively to shoes 21a, 21b carried about the axes 5a, 5b. An instrument for drawing a wheel profile curve of variable curvature to give true rolling contact surfaces comprises rods 1, 4, Fig. 8, having forks 2, 5. Rod 1 is rigid with a rod 3 and the rods 4 are rigid with rods 6. The latter carry sharp-edged inking rollers 7 and are pivoted at N<SP>1</SP>1, N<SP>1</SP>2 to the rod 3. If a tracing member passes through the forks 2, 5 and moves along a line AA corresponding to the common axis of the bevel wheels, the rollers 7 will trace out the profile curves B2, B<SP>1</SP>2 and B1, B<SP>1</SP>1.
