Class 39(iii) An electric iron for applying heat transfers, e.g. to garments, comprises a sheet of electricallyconducting resistance material 14, e.g. in cloth form, extending under the iron and above the sheet 14, a resilient pad 10 adapted, during ironing, to hold the sheet 14 resiliently in contact with the material to be ironed. The pad 10, e.g. of silicone sponge rubber, is retained in an open box-like holder 9 secured to a rod 8 to which is attached a handle 7. Slidably mounted on the rod 8 is a bushing 11 to which are fixed a ceramic member 12 and a cover 16, metal brackets 18 carrying the sheet 14 being secured to the opposite sides of the member 12. A socket 17 in the cover 16 enables current to be supplied to contacts 13 which are mounted on the member 12 and which contact the brackets 18. A helical spring normally tends to force the bushing 11 and associated parts downwardly whereby the sheet 14 is spaced from the pad 10. When the sheet 14 is placed on the material to be ironed, additional pressure forces the pad 10 into contact with the sheet 14, to facilitate the application of heat transfers to irregular, e.g. grained wood, surfaces.
