Abstract
672,410. Air and gas regenerators; air and gas cooling installations; plate heatexchangers. AIR PREHEATER CORPORATION. April 5, 1950 [June 25, 1949] No. 8542. Classes 64(i) and 64(iii) A heat-exchanger, in particular a combined regenerator and precooler for use in the working fluid cycle of a gas turbine, or the like, comprises a regenerator section 20 having passages for a gaseous fluid to be heated, intercalated with and extending substantially transversely of passages for a relatively hotter fluid, and a cooling section 41 surrounding the regenerator section and having passages for the hotter fluid and intercalated with other passages for the circulation of a cooling fluid. In the form shown, low pressure working fluid at high temperature from the turbine enters the apparatus through a connection 12 at one end of a cylindrical casing 10, flowing axially towards a baffle plate 16 and outwardly over radially extending hollow plate elements 21, Fig. 2, of the regenerator section 20 through passages 22 formed therebetween and then through passages 22c formed between similar plate elements of the cooling section 41 to a collector chamber 43 after which it is discharged through a connection 44. High pressure working fluid at low temperature from the compressor enters the regenerator section 20 through an inlet 32 and flows through the plate elements of that section in two passes 33, 34A and is discharged through an outlet connection 36. Cooling water flows through the plate elements of the cooling section 41 in two passes from an inlet 52 to an outlet 53. Secondary heating surfaces, e.g. pin fins 60, of looped wire, and channel members 61 or alternatively strip fins may be provided on the walls of the plate elements in the regenerator section (see Fig. 2).
