Abstract
<PICT:0672348/III/1> Lime putty is prepared by slaking quick lime, including magnesium lime, to provide a milk, partially de-watering the milk immediately after slaking by vacuum filtration on a filter medium in a continuous rotary drum filter, then conveying the de-watered material on the filter medium as a uniform cake through a cooling and aging cycle, and finally discharging as an irregular, putty-like mass. As shown, lime is slaked at say 180 DEG F. in tank 15 by water from pipe 19, using say 75-80 per cent by weight water, and passes to the pan 28 of a rotary filter 29. Pump 30 returns overflow from the pan to tank 15 via pipe 31. The filter drum is formed into a number of segments 33, those submerged and on the rising side of the drum being connected to pump 34 which returns liquid to tank 15. The filter web comprises contiguous filaments 32 passing around the drum and a roller 39, and which are caused to separate by guide rollers 391, 3911 on passing over roller 39 to discharge the material on to conveyer 50. Each filament consists of a core of neoprene &c. covered by a helical stainless steel spring. The filter cake at the topmost position of the drum may contain equal parts by weight of water and solids, its time of cooling on passing to roller 39 being, say, five minutes.
