Abstract

671,990. Cooling abrading belts. WAGHORN, H. W. (Hall, E. W.). Sept. 29,1950, No. 23946/50. Class 60. [Also in Groups VIII, XXIV and XXVI] A wheel for supporting an abrading belt is provided with an internal arrangement of passages whereby air is supplied to the inner surface of the belt to cool it. A wheel, Fig. 2, comprises two sets of discs, the discs of one set alternating with the discs of the other set. One set comprises discs 12 of semi-soft material, e.g. rubber, each having a number of axiallydirected holes 14 therethrough. The holes are connected by annular grooves 16 on one or both sides of the disc, these grooves communicating with radial passages 18 occupying the entire thickness of the disc and extending to the periphery of the disc. The other set comprises discs 20 of semi-soft material, e.g. rubber, each having axial holes 22 therethrough communicating, but not necessarily registering, with the holes 14. The assembly of discs is held between metal end plates 24 provided with holes 26 communicating with the holes 22, 14. Air is drawn, by rotation of the wheel, through the axial holes 26, 22, 14, passes through the annular grooves 16 and is delivered centrifugally through the radial passages 18 to the periphery of the wheel and to the inner surface of the belt thus cooling them. The discs are mounted on a bushing 28 and the end plates 24 clamped by nuts threaded on a spindle passing through the bushing 28. In a modification, Fig. 4, the discs 34 are all alike; each disc is of rubber and on each face there are ribs 36 alternating with grooves 38, those on one face being perpendicular to those on the other face. The disc has axial holes 40 and annular grooves 42.
