Class 45 [Also in Group X] A safety gate for the openings of doors, stairways &c. to prevent egress of children, is supported .by two posts A<SP>2</SP>, B<SP>2</SP> extending respectively from two sill members A<SP>1</SP>, B' which are relatively adjustable to urge the posts towards the sides X of the door &c. opening, there being no permanent connection between the posts above the sill members. Each post is joined to its sill member by an angle piece A<SP>3</SP>, B<SP>3</SP> to form L-shaped members. The sill member A<SP>1</SP> is bifurcated at its free end with tongues A<SP>4</SP> along the inner surface of the tines A<SP>5</SP> to co-operate with grooves B<SP>4</SP> in the sill member B<SP>1</SP>. A screw-threaded spindle E secured by pins E<SP>1</SP> to the member A<SP>1</SP> extends freely into a socket E<SP>2</SP> in the member B', and carries a knurled nut E<SP>3</SP> which, when rotated in one direction, moves the members A<SP>2</SP>, B<SP>2</SP>apart until they contact the sides X of the opening. The posts A<SP>2</SP>, B<SP>2</SP> which are normally slightly splayed outwards become flexed inwardly and so press more firmly against the sides X. The outer faces of the posts A<SP>2</SP>, B<SP>2</SP> and the blower surfaces of members A<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>1</SP> may be faced with rubber &c. F, and the posts may carry superimposed detachable strips so that the width of the posts may be adjusted, short lengths being removed, if required, to accommodate a skirting. The gate comprises tubular metal stiles G, G' interconnected by rails H, H<SP>1</SP>, H<SP>2</SP>, H<SP>3</SP>, and a solid pannelling or a lattice or wire mesh. The parts H<SP>1</SP>, H<SP>3</SP> telescope with the parts H, H<SP>2</SP> for adjustment of the width of the gate. The stile G and rails H, H<SP>2</SP> carry a lattice J, while stile G<SP>1</SP> and rails H<SP>1</SP>, H<SP>3</SP> carry a lattice J' which extends through a slot J' in the part H (see Fig. 9). The two parts of the gate are secured together by means of rack teeth K<SP>1</SP> on the part H' cooperating with a spring loaded plunger K on the part H. A latch bolt L slidable in the rail H<SP>1</SP> co-operates with a socket in a block L<SP>1</SP> on the post B<SP>2</SP>, being actuated by a toggle mechanism comprising a lever L<SP>2</SP> pivoted at L<SP>3</SP> to rail H' and a thrust link L<SP>4</SP> passing through a slot H<SP>4</SP> in rail H<SP>1</SP> and pivoted at L<SP>5</SP> and L<SP>6</SP> to the lever L<SP>2</SP> and bolt L. When the bolt L is driven home it not only locks the gate but also forces the upper ends of posts A<SP>2</SP>, B<SP>2</SP> into still firmer engagement with the sides X. When the gate is closed a peg N on-the stile G<SP>1</SP> enters a notch N<SP>1</SP> in the post B<SP>2</SP> to prevent downward movement when lever L<SP>2</SP> is pressed. The gate is hinged by means of hooks M on the gate inserted in eyes C on the post A<SP>2</SP>, or by permanently interconnected units. A stop D is provided on post B<SP>2</SP>.
