Abstract
671,783. Adjustable back rests. MARTIN, J., and MARTIN-BAKER AIRCRAFT CO., Ltd. July 27, 1950. [May 15, 1950] No. 12040/50. Class 52 (ii). [Also in Group XXXIII] A container for holding a parachute pack, carried by the airman attached to his harness, is so mounted on an aircraft seat structure and combined with a control actuated bv the airman that the container and pack form an adjustable back rest for the airman. The container comprises a compartment 4 to house the parachute, the container being pivotally mounted on the seat at 3 and provided at its upper end with shackles 24 for connection to the airman's harness. Mounted on each side of the seat on the pivot of a shackle 24 is one element 8 of a collapsable stay, of which the other element 9 is pivoted at 10 to the seat back. The member 8 is formed with notches which engage with a spring loaded plunger moved transversely of the axis of the members 8, 9 by a lever 7 actuated by a handle 15 and a cable 14. By movement of the handle to release the spring loaded plunger, the airman can adjust the position of the container about the pivot 3 and then lock it in any selected position. The notches in the member 8 may be bevelled on one side to enable the container to be moved aft only without release of the plunger or they may be formed so as to prevent movement in either direction. A stud 26 in the part 9 engages a slot in the part 8 to prevent separation of the two parts.
