Abstract
Organopolysilanes, the polymer units of which have the structure R2Si= and in which the units are linked by silicon to silicon bonding, are made by reacting in the liquid phase an alkali metal with a chlorosilane of the formula R2SiCl2, wherein each R is an alkyl radical and at least one R is an alkyl radical containing at least two carbon atoms. Sodium and potassium are the preferred alkali metals. The reaction may be effected either by adding the chlorosilane in a solvent, e.g. toluene or xylene, to the finely divided alkali metal or vice versa. Salt and alkali metal may be separated from the reaction product as by filtering and washing. The products vary from a grease-like material (diethylpolysilane) to a wax-like material (methyl stearyl-polysilane), and are soluble in warm toluene or xylene but only slightly soluble in the lower alcohols and ketones. The products may be used for stopcock greases, lubricants, car polishes and shoe polishes. In examples polymers are made from (1) (C2H5)2SiCl2; (2) (CH3)(C3H7)SiCl2; (3) (n-C4H9)2SiCl2, and (4) (CH3)(C18H37)SiCl2.
