Abstract

In an airscrew system suitable for alternative use as a propelling airscrew and as a lifting or supporting airscrew, the skew or twist and the cyclic pitch of the blades are adapted to be varied independently of each other during rotation of the airscrew to permit its use selectively as a propeller airscrew having twisted blades and as a lifting or supporting airscrew having blades of little or no twist. The pitch of the rotor blades may be varied by an equal amount along the blade by a rod 38, Fig. 1a, which operates through links 37, stationary sleeve 36, rotating sleeve 35 and collar 32 to rotate spar 18. The pitch may also be by an amount that decreases along the blade from root to tip by a rod 45 connected to a crank 41, mounted on an arm 40 on the rotor, by members 43, 44, 46. The blade is formed of portions 19, 20-30 mounted on drums such as 55, 56, Fig. 2, which may be rotated about shaft 18 hy pins 62, 63 carried by rod 31 and engaging slots 58, 59 and 60, 61 in shaft 18 and drums 55, 56 respectively. The inclination of the slots 60, 61, &c., increases toward the root of the blade. The rod 31 is normally balanced by a weight 53 and a spring 68 is provided to oppose the out of balance centrifugal force set up when the rod 31 is displaced. Specification 666 491 is referred to.
