Abstract

Allene is isomerized to methyl acetylene by contact in vapour phase at elevated temperature with a catalyst comprising: (a) silica with one or more oxides of Al, Zr, Th, Ti, Be, and B; (b) the product of treating alumina or zirconia or materials containing alumina and silica, zirconia or beryllia with silicon tetrafluoride, hydrogen fluoride, fluorine or chlorine trifluoride in the vapour phase; (c) alumina hydrogel treated with hydrofluoric acid, ammonium bifluoride, hydrofluosilicic acid, fluoboric acid or metallic fluosilicates or fluoborates other than those of alkalis and alkaline earths in the liquid phase; or (d) aluminium trifluoride or alumina with one or more fluorides of Al, Zr, Bi, Be, Zn or Cr. Preferred catalysts comprise aluminium trifluoride and alumina, alumina treated with gaseous silicon tetrafluoride, hydrogen fluoride or fluorine or alumina hydrogels treated in the liquid phase with hydrofluoric acid, ammonium bifluoride or hydrofluosilicic acid. Alumina hydrogel may be precipitated from a solution of the nitrate with ammonia, heated at 400-700 DEG C., and treated with SiF4 to a fluorine content of 3-10 per cent by weight. Substances such as silica, zirconia, thoria, and aluminium phosphate may be included. Reaction temperatures are 150-400, generally 240-300 DEG C., when space velocities are 50-200.ALSO:Catalysts for isomerizing allene comprise: (a) silica with one or more oxides of Al, Zr, Th, Ti, Be, and B; (b) the products of treating alumina or zirconia or materials containing alumina and silica, zirconia or beryllia with silicon tetrafluoride, hydrogen fluoride, fluorine or chlorine trifluoride in the vapour phase; (c) alumina hydrogel treated with hydrofluoric acid, ammonium bifluoride, hydrofluosilicic acid, fluoboric acid or metallic fluosilicates or fluoborates other than those of alkalis and alkaline earths in the liquid phase; or (d) aluminium trifluoride or alumina with one or more fluorides of Al, Zr, Bi, Be, Zn or Cr. Preferred catalysts comprise aluminium trifluoride and alumina, alumina treated with gaseous silicon tetrafluoride, hydrogen fluoride or fluorine or alumina hydrogel treated in the liquid phase with hydrofluoric acid, ammonium bifluoride or hydrofluosilicic acid. Alumina hydrogel may be precipitated from a solution of the nitrate with ammonia, heated at 400-700 DEG C, and treated with SiF4 to a fluorine content of 3-10 per cent by weight. Substances such as silica, zirconia, thoria, and aluminium phosphate may be included. Reaction temperatures are 150-400 generally 240-300 DEG C when space velocities are 50-200. In examples, precipitated hydrated alumina is treated with SiF4, NH4HF2, HF, or H2SiF6.
