Abstract

Class 87(ii) The bolster 10 is slidable in vertical guides afforded by accurately-machined vertical edges 3 of openings 2 in the front and rear of the press, and is vertically adjustable by having its undersurface inclined and engaged on the inclined upper face of a wedge plate 9 which is adjustable laterally in a guide channel 7 formed in the upper face of the bed 5 of the press. The wedge plate is guided also in a groove 11 formed in the underside of the bolster. The wedge plate is moved by means of a screw 17 that is secured to the wedge plate and works in a nut 20 mounted for rotation in a bearing boss 22 in frame 1. The periphery of the nut is formed as a toothed ring 23 which meshes with a pinion 24 moved by handwheel 26. The axial outward thrust of the nut is taken by the bearing boss 22, preferably through an anti-friction axial thrust bearing. The nut may be reained in any set position by engagement therewith of a locking pinion 30, Fig. 2 (not shown). After each adjustment, the bolster is tightened down upon the wedge plate by means of bolts 29 which take into holes in bed 5. The bolster is formed integrally with bosses 12 having dowels 13 which constitute guides for bushes 14 on an upper tool holder 15 carried by the slide 16. The bed 5 is bolted down on to the accuratelymachined edges 4 of the openings 2 by bolts 8.
