Abstract

670,551. Automatic frequency control systems. LELAND STANFORD JUNIOR UNIVERSITY, BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF. Nov. 12, 1941 [Nov. 20, 1940], No. 14591/41. Class 38 (iv). [Also in Group XL (c)] A plurality of ultra-high-frequency oscillators are stabilized with fixed difference frequencies, the oscillators having electron beam excited electron grouping and energy interchanging resonators, by varying the frequency of at least one of the oscillators by means including a mixer-detector having resonators connected, respectively, to the oscillators to produce sum and difference frequency voltages which are compared with voltage from a master oscillator to produce the frequency-controlling voltages. Fig. 1 shows fixed and variable frequency oscillators of the type disclosed in Specification 523,712 which are coupled to a detector mixer 16 which feeds audio amplifier 24 and limiter 26. As shown, the output is combined with that from a limiter 32 associated with master oscillator 31 in transformers 28, 30, so wound that with the voltages in phase quadrature the rectified voltage across resistance 39 balances that across resistance 43. The sum of the voltages across these resistances is a measure of the error and is used through an amplifier 13 to drive a correcting motor 12 and to control the bias and so the impedance of a valve 9 and thus the accelerating voltage and frequency of oscillator 2. In a modification, Fig. 3, combination of the outputs of limiters 26, 32 is effected in double grid amplifiers 50, 51, the phase reversing valve 48 providing the necessary phase reversal for one of the amplifiers. The system is particularly adapted for wave-guide communication for maintaining separate frequency channels at a desired fixed difference. An additional. buffer resonator 8, as described in Specification 670,571, may be associated with the oscillator 1, Fig. 1, to provide the external coupling to prevent one oscillator from influencing the frequency of the other.
