Abstract

670,361. Vehicle suspensions. CALLEBAUT, J. E. G. P. July 22, 1949 [July 24, 1948], No. 19332/49. Class 108(ii) In a motor vehicle having air chambers located between the axle ends and the frame, the chambers are so interconnected with one another and with the induction manifold that the height of the frame above the axle ends on one side of the vehicle can be adjusted so as to maintain the body on an even keel. whether proceeding straight or on a curve. The valve controlling the interconnections may be operated manually, by a pendulum device or electrically, and the operation of the valve may depend automatically upon deflection of the steering wheel or the direction indicators. Each air chamber may be divided by a partition into two compartments, one of which may be subjected to manifold depression and the other to air pressure. As shown in Fig. 1, a flexible air chamber 3 is disposed between the frame 2 and the axle 1. The normal position of the axle is determined by the usual spring 6, but its distance from the frame may be adjusted by connecting the inlet 5 to a source of air pressure on to the induction manifold. In the arrangement represented by Fig. 2, each axle end is connected to the centre portion 22 of a two compartment flexible air chamber whose end walls are rigidly connected by rod 25. The eight compartments are interconnected and connected to the rotary valve 15 as shown so that movement of the valve in one direction or the other tends to cause the vehicle frame and body to lift on one side and drop on the other. Relative movement of the partition and the end walls of the air chamber may be obtained by introducing pressure or partial vacuum to one compartment whilst the other is open to atmosphere, or by introducing pressure to one compartment and partial vacuum to the other. according to whether the two connections shown on the left and right of the valve 15 are connected to a source of air pressure and/or manifold depression respectively, or whether one connection is left open to atmosphere.
