Abstract
669,314. Pectin. A.S.P. CHEMICAL CO., Ltd. Jan. 7, 1949 [Oct. 22, 1948], No. 27554/48. Class 121 Pectin is extracted from vegetable matter, e.g. agave sisalana, phormium tenax, sugar beet and citrus fruits, by first reacting the matter with a relatively concentrated, e.g. 1¢ to 2¢ per cent, hot. or cold solution of an alkali metal or ammonium salt having an alkaline reaction, e.g. sodium carbonate, and then treating the matter with a hot dilute, e.g. 0.3 to 0.6 per cent, solution of such salt to extract a sol of an alkali metal or ammonium pectate. The hot dilute solution may be obtained by diluting the first solution with hot water, e.g. in the presence of the matter, or the first solution may be drained off and replaced by a fresh hot dilute solution. The pectate sol may be gelled by adding an acid, or a salt producing an insoluble pectate, or by salting out with sodium chloride.
