Abstract
669,310. Treating cereals. GENERAL AMERICAN TRANSPORTATION CORPORATION. June 28, 1948. [April 26, 1948] No. 17331/48. Class 58. [Also in Group XXXV] An apparatus for treating cereals in a continuous process has a steeping tank into which the material is transferred from a bin, a surge tank, an autoclave, a flash steaming tank, a dryer and a cooler, and means for conveying the material successively through the several parts of the apparatus. As shown the material fed down shoot 1 enters a grading device consisting of a tank 2 into which water is admitted at 3 and as it passes upwards carries the light particles, straw &c. with it and is discharged into a bin 6. A measuring device 8 driven by a motor 9 allows a measured quantity of material to pass into a screw conveyer 10 which conducts it to one of a plurality of steeping tanks 12 through which steeping liquid from a header 15 through a control valve 16 flows to an exit 18. The material is removed at a uniform and measured rate by a device 20 into a screw conveyer 22 having drain holes 26 to remove entrained water by which the material is conveyed to a vertical screw lift 24 from which it is discharged into a surge tank 29. The material is removed from the latter at a uniform rate by the device 30 and carried by a screw conveyer 32 having drain holes 36 and screw lift 34 and discharged through a measuring device 39 into an autoclave 41 to which steam is admitted through a valve 44 to tangentially disposed nozzles 45 located around the perimeter of the tank just below a baffle 42. The steam thus travels in a path tangentially to the walls and engaging the material falling from the baffle 42 imparts to it a whirling motion. When subjected to autoclaving for the required time the material is controllably removed by means of the device 46, which varies automatically according as the level of material in the autoclave touches a rod 49 and makes or breaks a circuit, to a conveyer 54 having drain holes 58 and vertical screw lift 56 and via a controlling device 61 into a flashsteaming tank 63 maintained at a reduced pressure by an aspirating device 64 which drains off vapours released from the ma,- terial, condenses and conducts them to a sump. From the flash steamer the material is discharged into a drier 67 and then a surge bin 69 and then into a cooling device 71 and then discharged into a conveyer 72 to be removed to storage.
