Abstract
669,211. Twisting yarns &c. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. Oct. 27, 1949 [Dec. 18, 1948], No. 27567/49. Classes 120(ii) and 120(iii) In the formation of a plied strand from single strands of wrie, yarn or cord, two or more single strands are pulled forward from their sources of supply to different metering devices adapted to insure that equal lengths of the singles strands are advanced in a given time, the singles strands are brought together and twisted into a plied strand by revolving them as a balloon about a take-up package, the plied strand is fed forward at a point between the balloon and its take-up package by exerting a power actuated pulling force within the balloon as such point, and the plied strand is then wound about the takeup package within the balloon. As shown, singles yarn a, b are twisted as they are drawn from packages A, B mounted on " two-for-one twist spindles 10 driven by pulleys 16. Packages A, B are held stationary by magnets secured to rings 77, 78 between which the ballooning yarn passes. The yarns are each forwarded by driven feed rollers 20, 21, 22 and come togther at a guide eye 24 to be twisted together to form a plied yarn c which is wound on to a package C. Yarn c passes through an eye of a flyer rod 34, mounted on a hollow spindle 32 rotated by a pulley 33, through a hole 35 in spindle 32 upwardly through spindle 32, several times around a pair of driven conical rollers 49, 50, upwardly through the centre of package C and over a roller guide 68 which traverses it as it is wound on to package C. A friction disc 30 rotating package C is, together with threaded traverse shaft 66, driven from spindle 32 by gearing 51, 52, 54, 58, 59, 61, 65. Gear 55 also drives rollers 49, 50. The gearing, rollers 49, 50, and the traverse mechanism, are carried by a cylinder 39 rotatably mounted on spindle 32 and held stationary by magnets 45, 46 mounted respectively on a ring 41 carried by cylinder 39 and a fixed outer ring 43. The ballooning yarn c passes between rings 41, 43. Spindles 10, rollers 20-22, and spindle 32 are rotated at definite relative speeds, the two spindles 10 being rotated at the same speed and the two sets of rollers 20-22 also being rotated at the same speed. Thus the plied yarn c comprises equal lengths of the two single yarns which have the saine number of twists per unit length. Rollers 49, 50 advance yarn c with a substantially constant tension: yarn c is guided on to rollers 49, 50 by a roller 71 on a pivoted arm 69 adjustably biassed by a spring 72; a slackening of tension allows yarn c to be moved towards the larger ends of rollers 49, 50 to produce compensating increase of feed speed, and vice versa. The axes of rollers 49, 50 may be at a slight angle to each other ,so that successive windings of yarn c around the rollers spread out slightly.
