Abstract

669,134. Treadle mechanism, BRICKLAND, F. J. Aug. 4, 1950 [Aug. 30, 1949], No. 22544/49. Class 136 (ii). A treadle mechanism has a lifter member engaged by the operator's knee and lifted thereby and means connecting the treadle and lifter so that downward movement of the treadle returns the lifter downwards to the beginning of its next operative stroke. As shown in Fig. 4 the treadle 50 is connected by a linkage 57 to a knee member 56 and by a linkage 52 to a fitting 51 upon the steering head of the bicycle. A link 53 connects the member 56 with a crank 54 mounted on the spindle 55 of the chain wheel 58 which is connected by a driving chain 59 with a sprocket 60. The treadle is mounted on a rod 49 on an extension 47 of the tube 46. With the feet on the treadles and the cyclist's knees engaging the members 56 the cycle is propelled as the treadle is oscillated. As shown in Fig. 1 the treadle 14 is mounted on a shaft 15 secured to side members 11, 12 and has links 21, 22 pivotally connected to bars 18, 19. The bars are pivoted to a fixed bar 20 and support a cross bar 17. The treadle also has a link 25 secured to a crank 28 mounted on the spindle 29 of a flywheel 30. With the operator's feet on the treadle the bar 17 continuously engages the knees of the operator during the movement of the treadle and assists the drive. In a modification the treadle for a cycle Fig. 6 has a toe pad 64 pivotally mounted on the rod 49 and between members 63, a heel pad 64, and a slot 65 for adjustably positioning the link 57. The linkage may be adjustable to suit the operator and the arrangement of the linkage may be varied.
