Abstract
A textile sizing composition comprises an aqueous solution of a blend of a water-soluble cellulose ether (preferably a carboxyalkylcellulose, particularly a sodium carboxymethylcellulose) and a polymeric water-soluble unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acid (preferably polymerized methacrylic acid). The cellulose ether may also be a methyl cellulose, a hydroxyethylcellulose, or a carboxyethylcellulose. The aliphatic carboxylic acid may also be a polyacrylic acid. The solid component of the composition may comprise 30-90 parts by weight of a sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and 70-10 parts by weight of a polymethacrylic acid, the former being preferably present as the major ingredient. The total solids content of the size may be 2-5 per cent. The composition may contain a softener or humectant, usually in proportions of the order of 10-100 per cent by weight of the sum of the weights of the cellulose ether and the polymeric acid. Suitable softeners are aliphatic polyhydric alcohols such as triethylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerol, sorbitol and, preferably, ethylene glycol. A lubricant is desirably present also, such as mineral and vegetable oils, sulphonated mineral and vegetable oils, fats such as tallow and sulphonated fats such as sulphonated tallow, these being included usually in amounts of the order of 5-30 per cent by weight of the sum of the weights of the water-soluble cellulose ether and the polymeric water-soluble unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acid. In an example a sodium carboxymethylcellulose having a viscosity of 40 cp. in a 2 per cent aqueous solution at 25 DEG C. and a degree of etherification of 0.5, is dissolved in water and a polymethacrylic acid, ethylene glycol and sulphonated tallow added to give a mixture containing 2.0, 1.0, 0.7 and 0.3 parts by weight respectively of the above ingredients and 96 per cent by weight of water. The solution is applied at 60 DEG C. to a nylon warp. The sizes are particularly suitable for use with nylon type textile materials, such as those of polyhexamethylene adipamide; with polymer fibres of amino-acid anhydrides or lactams, such as epsilon caprolactam; and with textile materials of condensation products of terephthalic acid with aliphatic dihydric alcohols such as ethylene glycol. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, comprises p also sizing solutions consisting of a water soluble cellulose ether (e.g. 1.5-5.0 per cent by weight) dissolved in water, either alone, or together with polyvinyl alcohol or gelatine. Ethylene glycol and sulphonated tallow may also be present and examples are given of such compositions. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
