An indicator drum of a cash register, for showing which of a series of totalizers is selected, has one or more additional indicating positions for alternatively showing the kind of operation for which the machine is set. Thus, the drum 5 has five indicating positions and is associated with a total-taking key T, in an operation control key-bank, as well as a bank of four salesman or transaction keys A-E. The stems of the keys A-E limit the upward movement of a differential totalizer selection rack 2, the return movement of which is transferred by a pinion 4 to a rack 3 which correspondingly adjusts the indicator drum 5 to one of its first four positions. Depression of the total key T, through a key-bank slide 6 and a connecting rock-shaft 9, projects a slide 11 into a notch 14 in the locking slide 1 of the keys A-E so that they cannot be actuated. The differential slide 2 then makes a full upward movement limited by a stop pin 16 and the indicator drum is moved to its fifth position. In a modification (not shown) having three totaltaking keys and the drum 5 correspondingly three additional indicating positions, the totaltaking keys actuate the slides 6 and 11 differentially, and the ends of the slide 11 and rack 2 are formed with co-operating stepped abutments so that the drum 5 is adjusted according to which total-taking key is depressed.
