In a rotary sammying machine for squeezing out moisture from leather or skins, of the type comprising a pair of driven rollers 6, 7, which may be alternately separated and brought together, and around which pass bands 55, 68 of felt or other absorbent material, supporting and conveying means are provided which lead the skins between the rollers, and a spreading device is raised and lowered in timed relation with the opening and closing of the rollers. The conveying means may be formed by an extension of the band 68 horizontally towards the front of the machine. The spreading device may consist of a cylinder 79, spirally bladed in opposite directions from its centre, driven in the opposite direction to the felt band 68, and automatically raised and lowered by means of bellcranks 83, rollers 84, and cams 85 on rotating cam-shaft 37; the pressure of the cylinder on the skin is adjusted by means of hand levers 86. The roller 7 is journalled at each end in crossmembers which slide on vertical pillars, and is raised and lowered by hydraulic piston, and cylinder means in timed relationship with the upward and downward movement of the cylinder 79, by means of a valve operated by a cam on the cam-shaft 37. Roller 6 is driven and transmits its drive to roller 7 through mangle gears. Gearing is arranged to drive the cam-shaft 37 and also the cylinder 79 in both its lowered and raised positions. The crossmember and piston assembly at one side of the machine may swing aside to provide access to the squeezing rollers. Tensioning rollers 56, 69 are provided for the felt bands. Roller 56 is adjustable at each end by bell-cranks 60, cams 62, and hand-wheels. Roller 69 is mounted on telescopic arms 76 and is adjustable at each end by a hand wheel. The arms 76 carry a roller 88 for co-operation with the cylinder 79. The unit comprising roller 7, felt band 68, roller 69, and arms 76 fulcrums about an axis 72 when the roller 7 is raised and lowered. The speed of rotation of the rollers and the timing of raising and lowering of the cylinder 79 and the roller 7 may be varied according to the weight and length of the skins treated. Water sprinklers 98, 99, 100 are provided for washing the felt bands.
