Abstract

Esters are made by reacting a partial ester of pentaerythritol and a monocarboxylic acid with an inorganic acidic compound of phosphorus. The monocarboxylic acid is preferably an aliphatic acid of 6-30 carbon atoms, e.g. oleic, stearic, lauric, or their homologues or tall oil acids. The phosphorus compound may be POCl3, PCl5, P2O5, PSCl3, P2S5, P4S7 or P2O3. A monohydric alcohol, preferably of 1-30 carbon atoms may also be employed in the reaction. Where HCl is released in the reaction, a neutralizing agent such as pyridine may be present. The polyesters formed may be monomeric or polymeric and may contain unesterified hydroxyl groups. Where phosphorus sulphides are used, thiophosphoric or thiophosphorous acid esters are obtained. Temperature is generally 0-150 DEG C. and acid catalysts may be employed. The products may be converted to metal salts and used as such or further reacted, e.g. with acid chlorides, anhydrides, halides, chlor-ethers or esters. They are used as oil additives. In examples, POCl3 is added to a mixture of pentaerythritol mono-oleate, C8Oxo alcohol, benzene, and pyridine and the ester obtained tested in lubricating oils to show its rust-inhibiting, anti-wear and film strength properties. Specification 452,508 is referred to.ALSO:Esters for use as lubricants are made by reacting a partial ester of pentaerythritol and a monocarboxylic acid with an inorganic acidic compound of phosphorus. The monocarboxylic acid is preferably an aliphatic acid of 6-30 carbon atoms, e.g. oleic, stearic, lauric or their homologues or tall oil acids. The phosphorus compound may be POCl3, PCl5, P2O5, PSCl3, P2S5, P4S7 or P2O3. A monohydric alcohol, preferably of 1-30 carbon atoms may also be employed in the reaction. The polyesters formed may be monomeric or polymeric and may contain unesterified hydroxyl groups. Where phosphorus sulphides are used, thiophosphoric or thiophosphorous acid esters are obtained. The products may be converted to metal salts and used as such or further reacted, e.g. with acid chlorides, anhydrides, halides, chor-ethers or esters. They are used as oil additives, anti-wear agents, extreme pressure additives, rust and other corrosion inhibitors, pour point depressors, viscosity index improvers, and detergents. They may be blended with base, preferably mineral, oils in amounts of .01-10 per cent, marketed as concentrates of 50 per cent or more, or blended with petrolatums, greases or synthetic lubricants. In examples, POCl3 is added to a mixture of pentaerythritol mono-oleate, C8 Oxo alcohol, benzene, and pyridine and the ester obtained tested in lubricating oils to show its rust-inhibiting, anti-wear and film strength properties.
