Abstract

Copolymers of one or more allyl compounds or derivatives with alpha, beta-unsaturated dicarboxylic acids or anhydrides having 1 to 3 carbon atoms between the carboxyl groups are modified by esterification with an aliphatic alcohol or by amidation or imidation with an aliphatic amine, one of the monomers or the modifying compound having a C8-C24 aliphatic chain. Allyl compounds specified are the esters, ethers, aldehydes and ketones, such as allyl and methallyl laurate and stearate, allyl phosphates, borates, and carbonates, esters of methyl vinyl carbinol, crotyl alcohol, and betachlorallyl alcohol, and the allyl ether of hydrogenated coconut oil alcohols, designated "Lorol" (Registered Trade Mark); the unsaturated acids and anhydrides specified are maleic acid anhydride, fumaric acid, mesaconic acid, citraconic acid and anhydride, glutaconic acid and anhydride, and itaconic acid and anhydride. Copolymerization may be carried out by heating the monomers together in bulk in the presence of a catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide, aluminium chloride or boron trifluoride; an inert solvent, such as toluene, naphtha, or a light lubricating oil may be present as a molecular weight regulator. The copolymers thus obtained are viscous liquids, which are modified by heating with an alcohol or amine in the presence or absence of diluents and catalysts. When esterifying the copolymers with an alcohol such as "Lorol" the reaction may be carried out in the presence of solvents such as toluene or xylene, sulphosalicyclic acid as a catalyst, and hydroquinone to inhibit further polymerization. The products, which may be further neutralized with ammonia, amines, sodium or calcium hydroxide, and metallic calcium, are used as additives to mineral lubricating oils. Specification 517,684 is referred to.ALSO:Mineral lubricating oils are modified by the addition thereto of minor proportions of copolymers of one or more allyl compounds or derivatives with alpha beta unsaturated dicarboxylic acids or anhydrides having 1 to 3 carbon atoms between the carboxyl groups, which have been after-treated by esterification with an aliphatic alcohol, or by amidation or imidation with an aliphatic amine, one of the monomers or the modifying compound having a C8-C aliphatic chain. Allyl compounds specified are the ethers, estors, aldehydes and ketones, such as allyl and methallyl laurate and stearate, allyl phosphates, borates and carbonates, esters of methyl vinyl carbinol, crotyl alcohol and beta-chlorallyl alcohol, and the allyl ether of hydrogenated coconut oil alcohols, designated "Lorol" (Registered Trade Mark); the unsaturated acids and anhydrides specified are fumaric acid, mesaconic acid, and maleic, citraconic, glutaconic, and itaconic acids and anhydrides. The use of "Lorol" as the alcohol in the after-treatment of the copolymers by esterification is described. Specification 517,684, [Group IV], is referred to.
