Abstract

Methanol is produced from a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen by formation and hydrogenation of methyl formate in two different reaction zones in a cyclic process, the gas mixture circulating permanently with replenishment, and both reactions being effected at below 100 atmos. and below 200 DEG C. Synthesis gas containing H2 and CO in 2 : 1 ratio may be reacted with an alcoholic suspension of an alkali alcoholate at 80-120 DEG C. and 30-60 atmos. to form methyl formate. The gases containing methyl formate are contacted with hydrogenation catalysts, especially catalysts containing at least 1 atom of Cr to 10 of Cu, such as copper chromite, to which alkaline earth and heavy metal oxides, and carriers of large surface area may be added, at 130-170 DEG C. Methanol is removed by cooling and the gases recycled to the first stage after make-up gas is added. Methyl formate present in the methanol may be separated by distillation and returned to the second stage. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a single-stage process wherein the alcoholic alkali alcoholate contains the hydrogenation catalyst in suspension. This may be effected at 100-150 DEG C. and 30-60 atmos. A second hydrogenation to convert residual methyl formate to methanol may be carried out. A shaking autoclave or tower reactor may be used. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
