Abstract

668,083. Grinding grain &c. HAEFLIGER, J. Dec. 16, 1948 [Dec. 17, 1947], No. 32586/48. Class 59 [Also in Group I] In an apparatus for cleaning, husking, polishing grains and pulses having a horizontal rotor rotating in a grinding trough, these parts are adjustable in relation to each other in various directions transversely to the axis so that the working gap between the rotor and the trough may be varied and means are provided to return at least a part of the material being treated when it passes out from the working gap between the rotor and the trough on the outlet side to the inlet side of the trough. As shown a rotor 4 rotating in a grinding trough 8 with a working gap 7 between is disposed within a drum 3 rotatable in the opposite direction on rollers 2 such that a return channel 9 for material under treatment which has passed out of the working gap 7 on the outlet side is left between the trough and the lower wall of the drum. The grinding trough 8 which carries at each end a plate 15 slidable horizontally and transversely with the longitudinal axis of the rotor is held by springs 18, on the outlet side of the working gap 7, at a minimum distance, adjustable by a handwheel spindle 19, from the outer surface of the rotor 4 so that the trough can yield to excessive working pressure. The trough is also suspended at its end walls by arms 21 which pass through the respective end walls of the housing with play on all sides and link rods 22 in such manner as to be movable up and down on levers 23 mounted on pins 24 on the outside of the end walls of the housing and carrying an adjustable weight 25. The weights 25 are so adjusted that the levers 23 bear against screw spindles 26 which form a vertically adjustable stop with a predetermined pressure so regulated that the material to be treated is not exposed to any pressure greater than that required for the working. If the pressure is exceeded the trough moves downwards to reduce the pressure. By adjustment of the spindle 26 a determined minimum width of the working gap 7 can be maintained in the vertical direction. The direction of rotation of the drum is such that the material introduced at one end of the outer-housing 1 through an aperture 6 is carried from the left hand to the right hand side of the rotor and thus passes into the inlet between the rotor and the trough for treatment. The rotor consists of a number of working discs and have on the periphery and side faces beaters, brushes, emery surfaces, wire cloth or polishing means. The drum walls may be provided completely or partly with working surfaces or partly perforated over at least a part of them . In a modification shown in Fig. 4, the return of the material from the outlet side is effected by pneumatic means the drum being dispensed with. The rotor 4 is disposed in a grinding trough as before, the trough having two hollow cylinder segments 8a, 8b with internal linings 8a<1>, 8b<1> provided with working surfaces mounted in an arm 33 movable on pins 30 through a spindle 26a acting on levers 23a. The material passing out of the working gap 7 passes into a return channel 35 communicating with a channel 37 passing around a horizontal pipe 36 to one end of which suction is applied having a longitudinal slit at the bottom. The treated material is thus sucked into the channel 35 the lighter parts, i.e. husks, pods being sucked up into channel 37 and ejected via outlet 44 and the heavier parts, i.e. the grains, fall down and pass into the vertical inlet mouth 35c and return to the working gap 7.
