Abstract

667,835. Sound-film apparatus. KOLB, O. K. and PETERSEN, A. C. G. March 22, 1950. No. 7119/50. Class 40 (ii). A method of adding sound synchronously with the action in an existing kinematograph film, comprises recording sound on an endless band 16 of magnetic material which is driven synchronously with a similar length band 1 of kinematograph film from which projection takes place on to a screen 6 visible to a person making a sound record via a microphone 27 and amplifier 26. The joins in the bands 1, 16 serve as synchronisation indications and are preset in relation to each other and to the projector 2 and recording head 18. During recording an erazing head 19, preceding the recording head 18, is connected to a source of high-frequency oscillations, and a reproducing head 17 is coupled via an amplifier 24 to headphones 25 worn by an operator in charge of a master switch 28 controlling the circuits of the heads 17, 18, 19. As soon as the completed recording has been heard by the operator, the operator operates the master switch 28 so that the heads 17, 18, 19 are connected as shown by the chain line connections in the figure, and is able instantly to check the accuracy of the synchronisation through the medium of the recording head 18 which then acts as a reproducing head.
