667,809. Making wire - drawing dies. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES; Ltd., and SHAW, J. D. Dec. 4,1950 [Dec. 5, 1949], No. 31181/49. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). Powder metallurgy.-A method of embedding a diamond in a metal support to form a wiredrawing die comprises compressing metal powder 10, about a diamond 7, mounted on a plate 12, by plungers 3, 4, Fig. 1, taking the compact from the chamber 1, removing the plate 12 and reversing the compact in the chamber and compressing to a higher pressure further metal powder 14 about the compact, Fig. 3. The compressed block is then removed and sintered and drilled along an axis determined by depressions made by pips 5, 6 on the plungers. A hole 9 in the plate 12 provides for the location of the diamond by optical methods. Powders used may comprise iron, iron nickel, iron nickel carbon, and iron nickel manganese. The pressure in the first stage may be 7000- 10,000 lbs. per square inch, and in the second 15,000-30,000 p.s.i., but pressures outside this range may be used.
