Abstract

667,720. Resistance coatings and deposits. WELWYN ELECTRICAL LABORATORIES, Ltd. March 21, 1950, No. 6985/50. Class 37. Carbon is deposited on insulating bodies, such as ceramic or vitreous material in the form of rods, tubes, or plaques, by the decomposition of hydrocarbon gas at high temperature, the bodies being placed in a gas-tight container which is heated in a furnace to and maintained at the required temperature until the decomposition has proceeded to the required stage, and the container being then separated from the furnace so that it may be rapidly cooled. As shown in.Fig. 1, a furnace consists of a frame 1 in which is mounted a refractory tube 2 on which the winding 3 is placed. The furnace rests on a frame 4. The ends of the refractory tube 2 are open to the atmosphere and adjacent to the ends are two supports 5 mounted on brackets 6. The supports 5 may be in the form of a semi-circular cradle or may comprise an arrangement of rollers. In the refractory tube 2 is placed a furnace cylinder 7 made from high temperature alloy, closed at one end. 8 and provided with a flange 9 at the other end. A plate 10 is bolted to the flange 9 with the interposition of a gasket. Attached to the plate 10 is a handle 12 for inserting or withdrawing the cylinder 7 from the furnace and which can serve as a means of entry to the cylinder for entry of inert gas or vapour, withdrawal of products of reaction, or for producing a vacuum. The ends of the cylinder may be water-cooled. Alternatively the cylinder 7 may be fixed and the furnace mounted on a trolley so that.it can be wheeled away from the furnace tube. The cylinder 7 is withdrawn from the furnace at a temperature greater than 200‹ C. A gas furnace may alternatively be used.
