Abstract
667,163. Extruding and blowing plastics material. BRITISH XYLONITE CO., Ltd. Feb. 4. 1948. [May 9, 1941] No. 3297/48. Class 87(ii). A bubble 16 of plastic material is extruded from a head 15 into a two-part mould 17, 17a. The mould is closed about the bubble and cutting edges 23a on the mould remove excess material from the bubble, Fig. 2 (not shown). The bubble is then blown to expand it into contact with the mould, Fig. 4 (not shown). Pinching members 19, 21 may form an eye on the moulded article. The articles are removed by a knockout pin and a blast of air, and discharged into a cooling bath, Fig. 5 (not shown). The cutting edges 23a may extend around the periphery of the mould cavity. In a modification. an article which may be made into a salt cellar is formed by raising a plunger 33, Fig. 8, into the bubble, after the mould has been closed about it and it has been blown into contact with the mould. Blades 35a, which may be spherically recessed underneath, trim the top of the moulded article. The plunger may be raised before or after operation of the blades. Low and then high pressure air may be used successively to expand the bubble. The extrusion head. the moulds and the pinching members may be operated as described in Specification 564,350.
