Abstract
Polymers or copolymers, useful as lubricating oil additives, are formed by polymerizing a saturated aliphatic diester of itaconic acid, at least one of the esterifying radicals of which has from 6 to 22 carbon atoms, alone, or with other such diesters or with saturated aliphatic esters or partial esters of other unsaturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acids. The esters may be prepared from alcohols or mercaptans or sulphur anologues of primary, secondary, branched chain or cyclic alcohols. These may contain substituents such as alkoxy, thioalkoxy, halogens, -NH2, -NO2, -SO3H and -CN, provided that they do not interfere with polymerization or render the polymers insoluble in lubricating oils. Mixtures of alcohols, e.g. derived from coconut oil, may be used. The copolymerizable esters may be prepared from maleic, fumaric, citraconic, mesaconic, bromitaconic, brommesaconic and bromcitraconic acids or, where possible, anhydrides. Mixtures of esters may be employed or mixtures of the acids or anhydrides may be esterified and polymerized. Polymerization may be effected in the presence or absence of diluents. Catalysts which may be used include benzoyl, acetyl, stearoyl and urea peroxides, boron trifluoride, aluminium chloride, clay and alumina. Emulsion polymerization is also mentioned. Metal, ammonium and amine salts may be prepared from the polymerized partial esters. The products, which should be oily and have molecular weights of between 1000 and 40,000, are useful as pour-point depressants, viscosity index improvers, oxidation and rust inhibitors, sludge dispersers, anti-foaming agents and dewaxing aids in lubricating oils.ALSO:A lubricating composition comprises a major proportion of a hydrocarbon lubricating oil and a minor proportion, e.g. 0.01 to 5 per cent by weight, of a soluble polymer of a saturated aliphatic di-ester of itaconic acid, the di-ester containing at least one hydrocarbon radical of from 6 to 22 carbon atoms, and the polymer having a molecular itaconates or with saturated aliphatic ester may be polymerized with other similar itaconates or with satuarted aliphatic esters or partial esters of other unsaturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acids (see Group IVa). The polymers are particularly suitable as pour point depressants for paraffin base oils and as thickeners, viscosity index improvers, oxidation and rust inhibitors, sludge dispersers, antifoaming agents and dewaxing acids in lubricating oils generally. In some cases the polymers may be in the form of their metal, ammonium or amine salts.
