[Also in Groups I, VI and XXII] A tool for cutting or abrading wood, metal, plastics and other materials or for peeling vegetables comprises a thin flexible metal strip having a number of cutting edges 2 upset from one face and forming part of the periphery of holes 1 through the strip for the passage of cuttings and a backing member having holes or grooves communicating with the holes in the strip to allow passage of cuttings. The cutting edges are produced as described in Specification 666,621. In the rasp shown in Figs. 9 and 11, the backing member comprises a die casting or plastic moulding 50 having grooves 52 arranged in chevron form to conform with rows of holes in the flexible strip 54; the grooves increase in depth towards the sides to assist in the disposal of cuttings. The strip is held on the backing member by fitting two of the holes 1, or two speciallyprovided holes, over headed pins 55 and by tightening a screw 56 so that a pronged washer 57 engaged in two of the holes 1 draws the strip into the recess 59 and tensions it. An alternative form of backing member may have one convex face, a concave face and two flat faces so that, by interchanging the cutting element or by having an element on each face, corresponding cutting surfaces are provided. In a further form of rasp, the backing member 65, Fig. 13, comprises a single strip of material bent to double channel form and located by slots 69 and stops 169; a handle 67 is secured on rods 68 welded to the backing member. The backing member may also be produced by bending thin strips of material to chevron shape and fitting them to a support plate or by bending up rectangular flaps from a plate which is then secured to a support member; the tops of the strips or flaps may be flat, concave or convex.
