Abstract

666,003. Fire alarms. PETCAR RESEARCH CORPORATION. May 21, 1949. [June 22, 1948] No. 13619/49. Class 118 (i). A fire detecting system comprises an elongated tube which traverses the zone to be protected, the tube is filled with gas absorbing material which is normally impregnated with gas and which is released from the material on occurrence of a temperature rise to cause expansion of the gas and. operation of an electrical contact. The Figure shows a fire alarm in which an elongated tube 2 is packed with granular charcoal 30 which is impregnated with carbon dioxide. With small temperature rises the slow diffusion of carbon dioxide into bellows 4 from the left hand end of tube 2 will be substantially equal to that into bellows 6 from the right hand end of tube 2 .via the orifice 20. With a rapid temperature rise, however, the flow of gas into bellows 4 will be much greater than that through orifice 20 into bellows 6, so that bellows 4 expands, contacts 8, 10 are made and the alarm lamp 16 is illuminated. The filter plugs 22 prevent the gas absorbent material from passing into the bellows.
