Abstract
665,981. Centrifugal machines. JAY, R. J. Oct. 6, 1947. [Oct. 4, 1946] No. 29713/46. Class 23. In an emulsifier including a pair of discs 9, 10 mounted for relative rotation and provided on their adjacent faces with annular interleaving formations 11, 12 having narrow spaces between adjacent surfaces to form a tortuous path from the centre of the discs to the periphery thereof, all the formations are of similar shape and are tapered when viewed in radial cross-section so as to decrease in radial width from their roots to their tips, and means are provided for axial displacement of either disc relative to the other. Liquids fed into the funnels 17, 18 are conveyed by wires 7a, 8a fixed to the interior of the disc shafts 7, 8 to the centre of the discs, and emulsion is discharged from the periphery of the discs to the outlet 3. The discs are driven by separate motors by belts and the mounting of discs, shafts and motors permits a screw 20 to be turned to adjust the axial distance between the discs. The axial adjustment may be controlled by a heat-sensitive device located in the emulsion outlet. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the discs have a vertical axis and are mounted above a drive motor, the combination being contained in a box, the top of which forms one disc which is stationary. In further modifications, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown) the axis of the discs is vertical, and the lower disc is stationary, the liquids being supplied through a drive shaft extending above the discs. To prevent emulsion leaking between the shaft and the cover of the emulsifier a chamber for air at pressure is formed around the shaft or annular fins are provided on the top surface of the upper disc.
